Options For Testing And Proctoring In Online Colleges

Options For Testing And Proctoring In Online Colleges

Heidi Tompkins November 7, 2020

In online colleges, one of the key challenges is determining how to deliver exams and assessments. Below are the three types of summative assessments that can be done remotely.

Remote proctored exams

Students can take proctored tests using their computers at a scheduled time from any location. They receive the same quality of assessment experience delivered in a secured, remote environment by ensuring the integrity of remote exams. However, consider the student experience first.

Many students are moving home or are still looking for accommodation. Their time zone may be different, and their computer and internet may have a different level of accessibility, too. You may need to have some flexibility with the timing or exceptions, depending on individual circumstances.

Open-book exams

Typically, this assessment style and the proctored exam have the same short duration. However, it allows the examinees to have their course notes with them. Now that digital reference materials, including images, videos, and audio clips, can already be included, there is a lot more freedom and creativity when making exams.

Experts recommend designing these exams to be a bit more difficult than those taken with no aids. Teachers should ensure that there would be no advantage in searching the web by focusing the exam on the course content and discussions. Because students are in remote locations, factor in the scheduling issues when planning the exam.

Asynchronous assignments

This is similar to take-home tests except that this has a longer window to complete. Students would not need to worry about schedule adherence in this approach. Instructors who are using this method should challenge students with more challenging questions.

Come up with questions that would make students apply their knowledge and analyze the content instead of demonstrating their understanding of the concept through memorization. Consider the use of collaboration to your advantage too. Designing a more challenging assignment, combined with peer collaboration, can be a rewarding learning experience.
